Shielded Metal Arc Welding

Instruction is given on SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) with different Electrodes. Students learn hands-on application for forming Tee, Lap, Butt, and Corner welds according to AWS (American Welding Society) and ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Standards in the Flat to Overhead positions. Equipment and tools needed: safety glasses, Coveralls or work shirt and pants (100% cotton NO polyester!) must have long sleeves, Gloves: all leather prefer with gauntlet, Boots: leather (over the ankles under pants), Head protection: (a) Welding cap (b) Hair net (c) Pony tail, No Jewelry. Basic tools: Locking pliers/ Vice Grips, Measuring tape (under 20’) or combination square, a marking utensil: (a) soapstone (b) silver pencil (c) permanent marker (d) scribe with a magnet, and tip cleaners.
GMAW (wire feed/MIG); Side cutting pliers or “Welpers” (welding pliers)
SMAW (stick/Arc); Chipping hammer and Wire brush
GTAW (TIG); Small wire brush
Optional: Leather apron and sleeves or FR (Fire Resistant) jacket
