Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) is used to designate unlicensed personnel employed to perform nursing care services under the direction and supervision of licensed nurses. The term also includes licensed or credentialed health care workers whose job responsibilities extend to health care services beyond their usual and customary roles and which activities are provided under the direction and supervision of licensed nurses. UAPs are prohibited from performing any licensed nurse functions that are specifically defined in Section 54- 1402, Idaho Code. UAPs may not be delegated procedures involving acts that require nursing assessment or diagnosis, establishment of a plan of care or teaching, the exercise of nursing judgment, or procedures requiring specialized nursing knowledge, skills or techniques. The only people required to take this course are those who will be delegated the task of assisting with medications. Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) may work privately, for facilites or staffing agencies, in assisted living facilites, home care, certified family homes, and foster homes. UAP's may not assist with medications in hospitals or skilled nursing facilites.

The “Assistance with Medication for UAP” course consists of eight (8) hours of instruction which is broken down into five (5) hours of classroom theory plus three (3) hours of manual skills practice. Successful completion of the course will include classroom theory reflecting the published Idaho curriculum for this course and will be verified by written testing with a passing rate of 80% or greater. Students who do not achieve 80% or greater must retake the 8-hour course to qualify to retake the exam and obtain certification. All testing will be without notes or assistance. The manual skills portion of this course consists of approximately three (3) hours of skill training, demonstrating basic skills needed to provide assistance with medication for clients. Students are expected to pass the clinical skill demonstrations with 100% competency.

This class is fully in-person, and a Certificate of Completion will be sent via email. A half-hour lunch break is included in the schedule. Upon registration, students will receive a confirmation email with additional instructions that need to be completed prior to the start of class. The instructor will distribute a workbook to students about a week prior to class starting. Students must read through and complete the workbook questions in order to attend the class.
